After several days of social media teasing, Rockstar Games today confirmed a followup to its critically-acclaimed 2010 open-world Western, Red Dead Redemption, was in the works with eyes toward a Fall 2017 release.
Actual details are scant at the moment, with the above teaser image and a flashy official site constituting the bulk of available information. Like its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a Wild West-themed open-world action game, with all the requisite saloon shootouts and horse-riding that implies.
Some have speculated that this game will (despite the name) be a prequel, following past protagonist James Marston and his gang. There’s no confirmation on any of that, however.
“With Red Dead Redemption 2, the team is working hard to push forward our vision for interactive entertainment in a truly living world,” Sam Houser, co-founder of Rockstar, said in an official statement. “We hope to deliver players an epic experience that builds upon everything we’ve learned making games.”
Red Dead Redemption 2 is confirmed for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but there’s no word yet on a PC release. The original Red Dead Redemption gave the platform a miss entirely, but Rockstar’s more recent titles have all released on PC, so keep your fingers crossed. A trailer is expected to land this Thursday, October 20th.
